Gripsholm Castle: Svealand

Gripsholm Castle provides a setting for a perfect one day excursion from the quaint town of Mariefred in Svealand. This impregnable looking castle was only occupied till 1864 but is still considered among the five royal palaces in Sweden. Situated by the side of lake Mälaren, Gripsholm Castle is known for its art gallery and is known as the national portrait gallery. With over 4000 portraits it is one of the largest in Europe and among the finest in the world. When visiting Gripsholm Castle, do not forget to eat a meal in the oldest inn in Sweden, Vardhus hotel.
