Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, or Clean India Mission, in October 2014, with the aim to eradicate open defecation, build 1.1 million toilets and clean up public places, among other things. Government released the result of #swachhsurvekshan on 15th February 2016 which used data from 25 teams of surveyors who visited 42 locations in each city, including railway and bus stations, religious places, markets, residential areas and toilet complexes. The survey teams took more than 3,066 photos. 1. Mysore
- The cultural capital of South Karnataka, Mysore was the kingdom of Tipu sultan.
- Known for its palaces, gardens -Brindavan Garden, shady avenues and sacred temples.
- Kingdom of Mysore is located at the base of the sacred Chamundi Hills, a powerful Goddess Chamundi temple situated close to the famous palace of Mysore.
- The 'Let's Do It!' campaign initiated by a group has gained momentum and is working hard towards making the city clean.
- Mysore was ranked as the second cleanest city in India and the cleanest in Karnataka by Urban Development Ministry.

2. Chandigarh
- Second cleanest and greenest city in India and is also hoping to become the country's first solar city.
- Chandigarh, a union territory, is the first planned city of India.
- Post independence, it became popular for its design and architecture.
- Nicknamed 'The City Beautiful', Chandigarh is also the first smoke-free city in India.
- The city is covered with banyan and eucalyptus trees, it also has various other varieties in its forested locations.
- The garden city has various gardens like Rock garden, Zakir Hussain Rose Garden, and a parrot sanctuary.
- Due to the lush green forests around the city, the area is a habitat to various animals and birds; both indigenous and migratory.
3. Tiruchirapalli
- Located in Tamil Nadu, Trichy is a popular cultural tourism destination and an industrial and education hub.
- The civil body initiates various programs like Gold for Plastic to keep the city plastic free.
- Various drives are held in major areas to generate awareness about hygienic practices With so many colleges and a high standard of education, youth is coming forward to carry out cleanliness activities across the city.
4. New Delhi Municipal Council
- NDMC is the name for the area of New Delhi governed by New Delhi Municipal Council.
- It is spread in an area of 43.7 sqkm and is frequented by tourists and outsiders for business and pleasure.
- After the Prime Minister's cleanliness drive, various steps are being taken to make the city litter and spit free.
- Planting of trees and maintenance of roads is also a part of the agenda.
- NDMC has begun 'May I Help You' service that discourages people from littering and issues a challan to the offenders.
- A door to door garbage pick-up service is also planned to prevent people from disposing household waste on the streets.
5. Visakhapatnam
- Visakhapatnam is the largest city, both in terms of area and population in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
- It has the only natural harbour on the east coast of India.
- is often known as The Jewel of the East Coast, The City of Destiny and the Goa of the East Coast
- has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.
6. Surat
- Most dynamic city of Indian state Gujarat is one of the well-developed commercial city in India.
- The civic authority in the diamond city of Gujarat has set up strict rules for keeping the city clean.
- A major cleanliness drive began in Surat after heavy rains and clogged drainage system spread plague epidemic in the city in 1994.
- Surat has a computerized water distribution and drainage system.
- A modern sewage treatment plant is in place to convert waste to energy.
- Most of the city gets pipelined natural gas thus reducing the consumption of other sources of energy.
- Auto rickshaws and public buses use CNG for operation thus keeping the city air clean.
