In a time when people don’t think twice before selling their own kids for a few thousands or even lakhs, Kurukshetra based Karamvir Singh, turned down an offer of a whooping sum of Rs 7 Crore, to sell his bull Yuvraj. The massive bull, belonging to the famous Murrah breed, was declared the champion at the All India Cattle Show in Meerut in 2014. The decision, taken by a 10 member jury, was based partially on the immense size of the bull as well as the fact that the owner was unwilling to part with it at any cost.
Weighing at around 1400 kgs, Yuvraj is one of the biggest bulls, boasting of a length of 14 feet and standing more than 5 feet 9 inches tall. Karamvir Singh spends no less than Rs. 25,000 per day on the diet and upkeep of his favorite animal. The bull’s daily diet consists of 20 litres of milk along with 5 kgs apple and 15 kgs of extremely high quality cattle feed.
According to Karamvir Singh, he has brought Yuvraj up like a son and he has been the source of the Rs 50 lakh annual income earned by Karamvir. However, it is not the money that prevents Karamvir from selling the bull as he does not need the funds and believes that everything in life is not just about money. This is what made him turn down the offer of Rs. 7 crore made by a farmer in Chandigarh.
Senior scientist Ravinder Sangwan, who works at the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Agriculture University, explains how Yuvraj proves to be a money minting cow. According to Mr. Sangwan, Yuvraj is a premium breed bull that produces 3.5 to 5 ml of high quality semen every day. This semen is further diluted to make the quantity to 35ml. The amount of semen required for artificially inseminating Murrah buffaloes is 0.25 ml which means the semen produced by Yuvraj can be used to inseminate 140 buffaloes.
The artificial insemination process costs Rs 1500 per buffalo, which makes it possible for the owner to make Rs. 2, 10,000 per day. Given the fact that Yuvraj’s mother was a high yield buffalo, who produced 25 litres of milk every day, it is not surprising that Yuvraj’s semen is in high demand amongst dairy farmers not only across Haryana, but the entire north India. This is also one of the reasons that does not make Karamvir feel surprised by the kind of offers and the amounts he gets to part with his bull.
