1. About
Jama masjid is the largest masjid in India located in New Delhi. Shah Jahan one of the Mughal emperors in India built this masjd in the year 1656 and has three great gates and touwers and minerates. These are all made with red sandstone and marble in white color. There is a biggest courtyard which can accommodate more than 25,000 people.
2. Architecture
This masjid is inaugurated by a mullah from Bukhara named Imam Bukhari. There are four gates on each direction of the mosque. These gates are all consisted with many steps. The height of the mosque is around 30 feet and it has an area of 1200 square meters. The dome that is made of red sandstone is wide. The minarets are provided with different storeys.
This place is having many old designs on the walls and also witnessed many historical events.
3. History
This place is once occupied by the British to make it a living place for the soldiers during their rule. Later they thought of destroying this place and failed to do it because of the population support against their idea of destruction.
4. Events
There are several events in history that took place in this Jama masjid. In 2006 April 14th there were two explosions after a Friday prayer and many of them are injured in this blast but no one is killed.
In 2010 there were two Taiwanese tourists who open fired and injured many people. These attacks made the government a warning. And ordered to increase the security for this masjid and is on continuous observation.
This total construction is built with an amount of 1 million in those days by the emperors.
The Islamic architectural style has made this place more attractive and many worshippers come here every day and especially on Fridays to conduct their prayers.
