One of the largest railway networks of the world, India Railways cover a route of 65,000 km and 7,500 stations carrying over 30 million passengers and 2.8 million tonnes of freight daily. 1. Indian Train Travelers Will Be Introduced with Optional Travel Insurance by IRCTC
Starting from 1st September of this year, Indian train travelers will be introduced with optional travel insurance by IRCTC. The new travel insurance scheme which will be initially introduced on a trial basis will allow passengers to opt a travel insurance for a premium of just Rs. 1 while booking e—tickets from the IRCTC website. The insurance cover will be available for all e-tickets, irrespective of the class. But, the facility will not be available for the sub-urban trains.
IRCTC is partnering with ICICI Lombard General Insurance, Shriram General and Royal Sundaram to offer this exclusive insurance scheme to travelers, which will give compensation of up to INR 10 Lakhs in the event of death or permanent total disability, INR 7.5 Lakhs for permanent partial disability, hospitalization expenses up to INR 2 Lakhs and INR 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains of the insurance covered individual in the event of injury or death from a train accident and other 'untoward incident' which includes dacoity, rioting, terrorist attacks, shoot-out or arson.
