1. Auroville - A Utopian City
Auroville, situated in South India is a small city where people from all over the world came to live together to showcase a unique experiment of human unity. This 46 year old township has shown the world as how humans can live together harmoniously in spite of the fact that they belong to different cultures, races and ethnicities and even speak different languages.
The experiment has been thoroughly successful as today Auroville has become a thriving city. People from every nook and corner of the world visit or come to Auroville to experience the feeling of universal brotherhood and bonhomie.
Auroville is located in Tamil Nadu. Some of the parts of Auroville come under the state of Puducherry. Situated near to picturesque Coromandel Coast, the town is 150km south of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. However, it is hardly 10km from the town of Puducherry.
Today, there are 2500 residents in Auroville. Around one third of them are Indians. The rest have come from 49 countries and their average age is 30.
The town is divided in 6 zones. Every zone is dedicated to a specific thing or activity. Their names are Green Belt, International Zone, Cultural Zone, Peace Area, Residential Zone, Industrial Zone.
Visitors are always welcome in Auroville. There is an exclusive visitors' centre conveniently located in Auroville that caters to all the queries and requirements of visitors.
The city has its own internal transport. Besides this, there are convenience stores, boutiques, restaurants, book shops etc. Auroville promotes environment friendly activities. So, bicycles are available for hire for residents as well as for visitors too.
The nearest airport and railway station is Chennai. The journey from Chennai to Auroville takes around three hours by road. There are taxis available for Auroville at both Chennai airport and railway station.
However, the township advises to hire their own taxi service for visitors' suitability. Auroville taxi service is available at both the airport and the railway station. Thus, a visit to Auroville is quite invigorating to experience a unique experiment on humanity.
