1. NH 22
Featured on History Channel’s “IRT Deadliest Roads” TV series, it wouldn’t be wrong to call NH 22 the Highway to Hell! Due to its hazardous conditions and poor maintenance, this is one of the scariest highways in India, where the roads make you cut through mountains. Death hovers over you in the form of tunnels and cliffs. Scary much?
2. The ZigZag Road
These spiral roads in Sikkim do not seem dangerous at all. These roads will give the most alluring view of the Himalayan crown, 11,197 ft. above the sea level. But don’t get fooled by the scenic view! The snaky roads will make your head infuriated even when you are sitting at the backseat. You need to have a special permit to pass through these zigzag roads. Don’t dare if you are faint hearted!
3. Mumbai-Pune Expressway
This one is not dangerous due to its nature but mostly because of human error and carelessness. Apart from the landslides, this expressway has experienced numerous accidents due to the heedless driving. According to a report, around 925 people died between January 2006 and June 2013 on this expressway.
4. Chang La Pass
The Snow covered Chan La Pass can give you some real nightmares. The travelers often feel nauseatic and breathless while passing through this snow covered route. The climate and winds can be extremely harsh, for most part of the year. Don’t forget to carry some extra warm clothes while traveling here!
5. Kishtwar-Kailash Road
Kishtwar-Kailash Road is a one way path that passes through the newly formed Jammu and Kashmir district. One wrong move of this climb can land you on your deathbed.
6. Kinnaur Road
The cliff hanging drives and the dark narrow holes of Kinnaur Road will leave you astounded. One misstep and you can fall into the Baspa river which will gulp you in no time. If you ever feel so adventurous that you decide to pass through this road, make sure to be extra careful around Taranda Dhank, which is quite popular for claiming lives.
7. Gata Loops
While driving across Leh-Manali driveway, you will come across a series of 21 hairpin bends that will send a chill down your spine. The road is believed to be haunted by the ghost of a traveller who was buried here. You will often see people offering mineral water and cigarettes on the burial spot.
