1. Moat Brae in Scotland
This townhouse, built during the reign of the House of Hanover in England inspired JM Barrie's setting of Never land while writing Peter Pan. Built in 1823, JM Barrie roamed the house and gardens in the 1870s, as the owner's children, Stuart and Hal Gordon, were his friends and schoolmates at the nearby Dumfries Academy. It is regarded as a masterpiece of Walter Newall, with prominent Greek style architectural features like an outstanding porch and long columns. The domed roof of the building also displays a Greek revival architectural theme.
2. Green Gables/Green Gables Heritage Center-Cavendish, Canada
Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables was based in Prince Edward Island, Canada, where she visited several times while growing up. The farm was owned by her cousins. This sprawling farmhouse is where Anne Shirley, the orphaned protagonist in the novel grew up after her parent's death and was adopted by siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert.
The real farm, called Green Gables is as described in the novel. It has dark green paint of the gables on the farmhouse. The exterior walls are however painted white, it has been restored, and the decor inside maintains the Victorian style of the 19th Century. A Puffed up dress in Anne's room and muslin curtains are some memorabilia from the book. The entire area has been converted into the Prince Edward Island National Park.
3. Neuschwanstein castle (New Swanstone castle)-Bavaria, Germany
The castle in Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault, later adapted by Disney, where sleeping beauty was enchanted into sleep. It was built in the 19th Century, commissioned and paid for by Ludwig II of Bavaria out of his personal coffers as a holiday retreat and as homage to the German Composer and opera conductor Richard Wagner. It was open to the public as from 1886, when he died. It is built in a predominant Romanesque style, with Gothic and Byzantine also included.
4. Narni, Italy
C.S. Lewis' Chronicle of Narnia was inspired by the Narni region in Italy. He stumbled on the name as he was looking through an atlas as a child. Narni was an ancient Roman City, and is currently a commune of Umbria. It is a popular tourist destination for those visiting Italy. A walk through the city takes you back to a period when Romans built intricate structures with advanced architecture, still being studied by scholars to this day. It has numerous attractions, from exquisite views of valleys below to narrow cobbled and paved streets and tiny beautiful restaurants that serve rare and popular Italian delicacies.
5. Fort House, Kent
This was Charles Dickens holiday home, and was depicted by Bleak House in David Copperfield. An excerpt from the book, describing a view of the English Channel from the house reads, "Fog up the river, where it flows among meadows...fog on the Essex marshes, (and) Kentish heights".
6. Cameron Cave, Missouri (Mark Twain Cave Complex)
McDougal's Cave in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is really set in Cameron Cave in Missouri, in the United States of America's Midwest. It was discovered in 1925 by Arch Cameron and is the oldest show cave open to the public in the state of Missouri.
7. The Alsace Region of France
Belle's Village in Beauty and the Beast is an accurate depiction of the Germanic region of France called Alsace. The place has numerous villages, distinguished by steep roofed brightly painted houses. The colors are significant, differentiating butchers, bakeries and such other stores from the others. Points of interest include the Strasbourg Cathedral in the region's capital of Strasbourg and the Lac Blanc.
