Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage

Opened in the year 1975, Pinnewela Elephant Orphanage is one of its kind attraction. Covering an area of 24 acres, this breeding ground for elephants is home to the largest population of elephants in captivity. A tourist to the orphanage can watch the elephants busy in their daily chores including eating, nursing their babies and taking a bath. You are allowed to go very close to the bathing area of the elephants and enjoy the views of this magnificent animals. There are nearly 60 elephants in the orphanage today which is open to visitors on all days.
