About Jernimos Monastery Lisbon

Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as early as 1983, Jernimos Monastery is arguably the most prominent building in Lisbon and a landmark for the city. Considered to be a hallmark in Manueline Style, Jernimos Monastery was reconstructed under the patronage of Manuel 1 to commemorate the return of Vasco Da Gama from India. It took nearly 50 years to complete this one of kind monastery that even till today is the most beautiful structures in the City. The main entrance on South Portal with all the sculptures and figures around the gate is truly breathtaking to watch. The western portal is somewhat different from rest of the monastery as it is constructed in Renaissance style.
