Enchanting people ever since it was constructed in the year 1642, Shalimar Gardens in Lahore has been most important attraction of the city. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, the garden employs every architectural feature that has made the Mughal architecture most distinct. The gardens are laid out in the form of a oblong parallelogram which contains 410 fountains that create a picturesque sight when operating in tandem. The gardens are constructed in a terrace system with three layers descending from south to north. The upper terrace is named Farah Baksh (Bestower of Pleasure), the middle layer is named Faiz Baksh (Bestower of Goodness) and the lower layer is called Hayat Baksh (Bestower of life).
