Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square is one of the most important destinations in political scenario of Malaysia. It is here that the Flag of Malaysia was first hoisted on August 31, 1957. It was hoisted on a 100 m high flagpole which is the tallest in the world. Surrounding the square are many buildings that still reflect Malaysia's colonial past. Some of the watching buildings are Royal Selangor Club Complex, the National History Museum, the Memorial Library and the Gothic style building of St. Mary's Anglican cathedral. The annual National Day Parade, called Hari Merdeka Parade, which attracts an impressive number of patriotic people, is held here.
