Situated in Malacca, Cheng Hoon Teng is the oldest functioning Temple in Malaysia. Attracting pilgrims since it opened in the year 1645, Cheng Hoon Teng became the most revered place of worship for Hoklo community. Covering an area of 4600 m2, the temple is built according to the principles of Feng Shui. The temple is divided into many small prayer halls and one main prayer hall. The main prayer hall is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin. The most evident feature of the temple is the seven meter tall red flag pole on the left side of the main prayer hall. Though the temple is more than 3 centuries old, it is very well maintained. The temple, for this, was given an award for outstanding architectural restoration by UNESCO.
