Borobudur

The first sight itself of this 9th century Buddhist monument will leave you awe struck. This Mahayana Buddhist monument is situated in central Java and contains six square platforms topped by three circular platforms. The main dome is located on the topmost platform. It is surrounded by 72 statues of Lord Buddha, all of which are kept inside stupas. There are in all 504 statues of Lord Buddha. It was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO after a huge restoration work was carried out in the region. It attracts Buddhist pilgrims almost throughout the year but the heaviest foot fall occurs during the festival of Vesak, which is celebrated here at the monument.
