About Mummers' Parade
Essentially a celebration of the new year, Mummers' Parade is a event that radiates joy and happiness all over the air of Philadelphia. Without any doubt, it makes it to the list of the most popular festivals of the region. Somewhat a street party, this fiesta is a breeding ground for fashion trends and designer clothing. Mummers' Parade goes back to the 17th century for its origin and is a happy blending of several cross border cultures- Irish, English, German, Swedish, Finnish and even African-American bequests. All these multi cultural influences add to the over all charm of the festival.
All the action takes place in the Broad Street of Philadelphia where over 10,000 people gather to welcome the new year in style. These people cheer the three groups that marks this show: Comics, Fancies and String Bands. The Comics are generally the clowns that come in colorful outfits, often with multi-level umbrellas. They usually start the parade and provide the audience ample dose of entertainment. On the other hand, the Fancies are consist of four major clubs . Whereas, the String Bands, as the name suggests is the troop of performers who spell the magic of music with guitars, banjos, saxophones, accordions, double basses, drums, glockenspiels and violins. At the end of the parade, the groups are facilitated on the basis of their presentation and performance. When the procession ends at the Philadelphia's City Hall, awards are given on different verticals- best theme, best costume and originality. Come home to Philadelphia to welcome this new year!
