The Mahavir Jayanti is thoroughly dedicated to the 24th last Jain tirthankar, Vardhaman Mahavir (religious guru) of faith. The day is celebrated as his birth ceremony, as he is believed to be born somewhere in the 7th century BC, and was the sole founder of Jainism. However, the day means a lot for the followers of Jainism where they express their happiness through varied festivities.
The Mahavir Jayanti is a big day for the stanch devotees of Jainism. During this day, they spend a time close to their one and only guiding light, Vardhaman Mahavir, and inevitably assemble at the awesomely decorated Jain shrines to participate in the religious affairs highlighting their reverence in a great way.
As far as the celebrations are concerned, they take place on a higher level and includes the massive decoration of shrines and temples with flags in places like like Sri Mahavirji in Rajasthan, Girnar and Palitana in Gujarat, Parasnath Temple in Kolkata and Pawapuri in Bihar. Firstly, in the morning, the revered idol of the guru is given a ceremonial bath with ‘abhiskek’. Secondly, the idol is placed on a cradle, and thirdly, it is being carried out for a grand procession to catch the glimpse of public eye where the interested ones make several offerings to their beloved guru like milk, fruit, rice, water, lamps and incense and thus seek his endless blessings.
Besides, you may also see some important sections of the Jain community participating in a grand procession and organizing powerful lectures for all. Plus, free food and drink for all passersby are also also arranged. However, no one thinks to come back home without donating money, food and clothing for the needy ones.
