Jelling Stones

Recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO in the year 1994, Jelling Stones are one of the oldest attractions of Denmark. Situated in the city of Jelling, the stones have been a part of Denmark history since the 10th century. The older of the carved rune stones was raised by the first King of all Denmark, King Gorm, in memory of his wife and the second stone was raised by their son Herald Bluetooth in memory of his parents and in celebration of conquest of Denmark and Norway.

Both the stones have runic inscriptions on them. On the larger of the two stones, the one installed by Herald Bluetooth, there is a figure of Lord Jesus Christ on one side and on other side figure of a serpent wrapped around a lion. The stones are kept in open air and after so many centuries of weathering, the cracks have started to develop.
