Bellamar Caves

Otherwise known as Cuevas de Bellamar, these are a a cave system that has been one of the most visited tourist destination of Cuba. Believed to have been formed some 300,000 years ago, the Bellamar Caves were discovered by chance in February 1861 by a slave. The port city of Matanzas is just 3 miles away from the caves. So getting to this place is not a burden.

This series of caves have a very strange charm and beauty as many of its formations are shining due to the crystalline layer that covers them. The visitor enters the cave by a room named Gothic- a square chamber that is 80 meters long and 25 meters wide. In this cave system, a traveller can witness some amazing rock formations like The Carrots Garden, The Chapel of the 12 Apostles, and the most famous of all- Columbus´ Cloak.
