Nearly eighteen percent of total land area of Costa Rica is under national parks and Palo Verde National Park is among the most important of all. Covering an area of nearly 13,058 hectares, the park mainly consists of marshy lands, floodplains and limestone ridges. This provides for different types of habitat thus attracting various species of animals. The park is most famous among bird watchers who come here to spot more than 300 species of birds, both migratory and residents. The ecology of the park also supports many reptiles around the floodplains. Other animals that are found here are monkeys, deer and coatimundis.
