With an area of 110,994 sq. km., Bulgaria is not among the biggest countries but surely is one of the most charming. Almost half of the country is mountainous and rocky, covered with six different mountain ranges cutting across the length and breadth of the country.
Rhodope mountain ranges is probably the most scenic of them all but it is hard to pick. The area that is not covered with mountains is mainly in Danube Valley, which itself is a a huge attraction. The cities of Bulgaria, like in all other countries, are up and running for development. Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria and among the fastest in development path. But it has not sacrificed its soothing and relaxing aura that has for decades attracted tourists.
Situated on the foot of Vitosha and Lyulin mountains, Sofia impresses one an all with the magnificent Alexander Nevski Cathedral situated right in the center of the city. Other major cities of Bulgaria are Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and Rousse.
If you are planning to travel every bit of Bulgaria, then make sure that you keep ample time in hand. One reason is of course that there are too many sensational places to see; and the other is that traveling inside the country is a bit slow because of the mountainous regions. The transportation system of the country, however, is wonderful with low fare airlines and long distance trains present in good frequency.
The best time to visit Bulgaria is between June and September when the climate is the most pleasant. For winter sports, months starting December till February are apt. [-]
