The Carnival of Binche

Witness the famous Carnival of Binche which is not only one of the most colorful, but also among the longest festivals of Belgium. Organized in the city of Binche. the preparations start 49 days before the main carnival. On all the in between Sundays, a ritualistic dance or an act is performed. The main carnival is a three day affair which are called the Fatty days. On the first day, Fat Sunday, one could see the performers with complete costumes, performing dance. The second day called the Fat Monday sees at performances of Giles dance to the sound of barrel organs. The day which is marked with political discussions, ends with a flurry of fireworks that light up the night sky. However it is the third day, Fat Tuesday that is the most important and attractive. Processions, performance and fireworks are intrinsic part of the celebrations on this day.
