About Lake Baikal

With an area of nearly 31,494 km2, Lake Baikal is the largest fresh water lake in the world. Situated in the Southern Siberia, Lake Baikal was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 1996. Lake Baikal is also the deepest lake in the world with a depth of 1637m. Lake Baikal is also one of the most important ecological destinations in the world as it is home to more than 1700 species of flora and fauna in the country. And the interesting part is that nearly 2/3rd of these species are not found anywhere else in the world. With an age of more than 25 million years, it is also the oldest lake in the world.
